Angles village church [click to enlarge]The delightful village of Angles is just a one-minute stroll away from Le Palmier, Le Pressoir and La Pergola. (N.B. La Mirabelle is a two-minute drive away.) Angles is a typical French village with interesting shops to explore and a good choice of restaurants, cafés and bars. At the heart of the village is a 12th-century Plantagenet-style church.
During the peak season, Angles has a large street market every Wednesday and Sunday morning where you can sample locally produced cheese, meat, fish and wine.

Angles has its own Office de Tourisme, as well as a post office, two banks, a hairdresser, a beauty salon, an aromatherapist, a pharmacy, five cafés/bars and five restaurants. There are also two supermarkets, two butchers, a fishmonger and a fruit & vegetable shop.

Boating activities just 8 minutes away at La Tranche [click to enlarge]La-Tranche-sur-Mer (10 minutes): this seaside resort has 13 kilometres of sandy beaches and a large sea water reservoir, which is ideal for elementary sailing courses! Equipment and courses are also available for windsurfing, kite surfing, surfboarding, bodyboarding, longboard and skimboard. La-Tranche-sur-Mer has over 18 kilometres of cycle tracks - a relaxing way to explore both the town and the surrounding countryside away from the bustle of the main roads. From the town’s pier, there are boat trips to nearby La Rochelle, Fort Boyard, Ile-de-Ré and Ile-d’Aix.
La-Grière-Plage (15 minutes): perfect for those who prefer quieter beaches but still like their creature comforts! The beach is near the resort of La-Tranche-sur-Mer, but even in the height of summer, it offers superb sand with a less frenetic atmosphere. Delicious local cheese [click to enlarge]L’Aiguillon-sur-Mer (15 minutes): the authenticity of this small fishing port has been beautifully preserved. During the summer months, visitors can buy fresh fish and other local produce from the town’s market stalls, or sample L’Aiguillon-sur-Mer’s famous oysters and mussels. L’Aiguillon-sur-Mer is the Vendée’s southernmost seaside resort. Situated on the River Lay estuary, the town borders both the Charente-Maritime and the Marais Poitevin. Fishing and water sports are on offer at L’Aiguillon-sur-Mer - and three large seawater pools next to the beach are great for children who want to swim and play in the sea.
Les-Sables-d’Olonne (40 minutes): the historic maritime town of Les-Sables-d’Olonne has the largest port in the Vendée region and is the start and finish point of the "Vendée Globe" - a non-stop yacht race around the world. With beautiful south-facing beaches and a variety of water sports to choose from, you can also visit several museums, such the Shell Museum, which houses more than 45,000 tropical shells... try walking down "rue de l’Enfer", the narrowest street in Europe, which is only 43cm wide... buy some delicious shellfish from the seafood market stalls... or treat yourself to lunch at one of the numerous restaurants.Les-Sables-d’Olonne [click to enlarge]
Jard-sur-Mer [click to enlarge]Jard-sur-Mer (20 minutes): renowned for its picturesque châteaux which date back as far as the 16th century, Jard-sur-Mer also has several traditional windmills, some of which are still in operation today.
La Rochelle (60 minutes): set in architecturally stunning surroundings, La Rochelle is an historic seaport with many ancient churches, elegant townhouses and two historic towers built at the entrance to the harbour. Although the town is a thousand years old, it has great shopping opportunities for fashion lovers! It’s definitely worth a day trip to admire the architecture, stroll around the shops and sit in the Parisian-style cafés to watch the world go by.Morning coffee and croissants! [click to enlarge]
Shopping on Ile-de-Ré [click to enlarge]Ile-de-Ré (90 minutes): this scenic island is one of the jewels on the Atlantic coastline. A bridge connects the island to the mainland close to La Rochelle. Once on the island, cycle along the coastline marvelling at the whitewashed fishermen’s cottages, relax on the fine sandy beaches, or explore the ports, forests and salt marshes. Don’t forget to try the local seafood, which includes such delicacies as oysters, lobsters, shrimps, langoustines, coquille Saint-Jacques and red snapper.
Mervent Forest (60 minutes): with over 200kms of well-marked footpaths, cycle paths and horse riding trails, Mervent Forest is the largest forest in the Vendée and is a fantastic place to enjoy some tranquil time away from the busy seaside resorts. La-Tranche-sur-Mer: History
A prehistoric settlement was located near the Pointe du Grouin-du-Cou - as sea levels have risen, the exact spot has now disappeared, but it is approximately 2km from the shore. In 1615, the boundaries of the parish of La-Tranche-sur-Mer were formally designated by the Bishop Armand Jean du Plessis de Richelieu.

La-Tranche-sur-Mer: Today
La-Tranche-sur-Mer was devastated by the Germans during the Second World War - most of the houses were dynamited, as were some lighthouses, so many of the town's buildings have been constructed since 1945. Today, La-Tranche-sur-Mer is a major holiday destination - the town has 2,540 inhabitants during the winter, but around 100,000 inhabitants during the summer!
